MY REVIEW
My daughter and I watched the movie A Mile In His Shoes last night and enjoyed it on so many different levels. First off, we both LOVE baseball so that was already a huge PLUS in our books (smile). However, I think what particularly interested us in this movie was the main character, Mickey, has a form of autism called Asperger syndrome. We know several people with Asperger syndrome so it was nice to see a main character portrayed this way.
In the movie Coach Murphy (better known as Murph) goes on a recruiting trip to help out his losing team. Along the way, he swerves and puts his car in a ditch. Shortly after his incident, a young man walks along the road chasing a farm pig. Thus, enters Mickey.
After convincing Mickey to allow him to use the family telephone, Murph sees right away that Mickey has an unprecedented talent for pitching a baseball. So naturally he tries to recruit Mickey. Mickey’s overbearing father denies his request to recruit his son, and so Murph leaves his card behind and moves on.
Eventually Mickey is allowed to go for team tryouts and impresses everyone with his amazing pitching skills. Just when everything seemed to be going well, jealousy gets the best of one of his teammates and a horrible situation occurs.
The movie did a great job teaching that regardless if a person has Asperger syndrome or not, it does not limit their ability to achi
eve their God given purpose. It shows how sheltering people with Asperger’s or having low expectations of their abilities is NOT the way to treat them. It also shows how faith in God can help you through any situation.
