Heaven is for Real for Kids – A Book Review

Earlier this week, the children and I read the book, Heaven is for Real for Kids. During our reading time, this book brought forth great discussions between our 3 children ranging in age from 3-10. One of the best things that I found while reading this book is that it is much more easy for a child to understand as opposed to original adult version initially published. Because we read it on my Kindle, we did not see the illustrations.

This book is about a young boy, Colton, who was hospitalized while sick. During his hospital stay, young Colton tells the beautiful story of visiting heaven. Colton has very descriptive insights about his visit, but more importantly receives the message from Jesus that He loves children very much. The book gave very simple, child-like descriptions of heaven, most of which are followed by Bible scriptures going along with what Colton saw.

I think this book is a sweet account of one young boys life changing journey. My children were definitely interested in his story, and it offered some great conversation starters with the scripture references. It is a great read for any child and parent to share!

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars as it was well laid out for children without compromising the original story. There is also a wonderful Q&A; in the back of the book that the children enjoyed as well.

I didn't realize there was a children's version. Our family listened to the audiobook version of Heaven is for Real on a recent roadtrip. They were very attentive to the entire story. If we got out of the car for a pit stop, they immediately begged for the story to be turned on again.

Interesting. I've heard of the adult version, but not read it. Does this (and the adult version) line up with biblical truth concerning Heaven? I only ask because I've seen a lot "new age" tripe and would want to make sure a book I gave my kids lined up with Scripture.

I got this book as a gift, but didn't care for it. While most of it lines up with Scripture, there are a few things Colton describes about Heaven that the Bible makes no mention of. Examples) Jesus' very own multi-color maned white horse, getting to choose wings for flying, pictures of people wearing halos on their heads, among a few others. While the things mentioned are harmless enough, I am very leery of any of these types of books especially when they discuss things the Bible does not mention about Heaven.

Tina, I think that is a decision you'll have to make for yourself. For our family it was a good read once but it isn't a book we'll read again per se. However, it is not the Bible, rather one persons testimony about an experience – and I am very clear with my children that books are OK, but the Bible should always be the main text to judge all things. At the end of the day, it sparked some wonderful conversations with our children that led to great prayer and further reading of scripture
